Converting and Improving a K40 I have invested an inordinate amount of time converting my K40 to a better cutting and engraving tool.
This post concatenates my K40 conversions posts into a build index. I am doing this with the intention of helping others reduce or eliminate their research, design and build time for K40 conversions. This build log should have everything you need to know to clone my design including parts.
That means that I am analyzing each subsystem, understanding its operation, specifying a conversion design followed by build and then finally verification of performance. This post pulls together detailed posts for each subsystem with the expectation that in the end it will give the community a specific configuration that works. My ultimate intention is for this information to be simple to use for most makers yet detailed enough to satiate an engineer. Some of this content was designed by myself along with the associated testing and research.
However a large amount of content linked in here came from the hard work of others. I just linked things together in a way that made sequential sense to me. I thank and acknowledge the work of many other members of these communities that contributed in a significant way. This is a work in progress so expect changes. The lift table integration is not included on this sketch. K40's do not come with interlocks however every K40 should have interlocks installed! The K40 laser is dangerous and can blind you.
Don't defeat them when your inside the machine. Its not that hard to make an adjustment and close the lid to check the results. Wear your safety glasses especially if you have defeated interlocks which I just suggested you do not do!
I used a simple approach to implement the finder because I wanted to keep the head bracket simple. The disadvantage of this approach is that the pointer is offset from its true position when the table goes out of the focal range.
If I do need more accuracy I plan to move the finder so that it enters and exits the light path through the objective lens and therefore totally remove it from the head altogether more on this idea later.

What is the best course of action to align the actual bar that the head travels across so that this is properly aligned? This also affects my ability to properly align the lenses, since proper alignment on the left side of the Y axis has been fine, but the top right and bottom right corners have been difficult to compensate for since the bar is skewed.
So not only are the objects I cut out misaligned, but the items on the right are not cut as clean as the left. How can I fix this?
K40 Upgrade Parts
Are you familiar with the belt tensioning system on the actual gantry? There is in fact 2 more I believe on the left and right lower beams for the 2 belts that drive the gantry forward and backward. These are located in the back kinda under the laser tube and are a pain to access. It sounds like the gantry itself is not positioned the same on the 2 belts and that one side needs to be shifted by a few teeth.

Including a picture of the gantry from a top-down view so my point is better understood. Starting a search online for a better view of that area where the belt is connected to the gantry as well so I can see exactly what I need to move and how.
If anyone can provide pictures, that would be phenominal. Thanks in advance! The rail on the right that the rollers glide on: at the very back there is a tensioner.
There should also be one on the left side also. There screws shown in pic 2 coming out of the end of the gantry are the same as you fill find at the end of those rails under the laser tube. It might be easier to see this if you remove the entire gantry.
Ideally the gantry rail should be square to the perpendicular rails in pic 1. Is it just me, or does the silver plate holding the mirror look skewed in comparison to the rail of the Y axis? Ithe mirror alignment is close, but not quite aligned. Using the tape method, the positioning of the laser in the top right corner is about 1mm up and 1 mm to the right of the positioning in the top left corner.
Not quite sure what I can do to better clean that up. The skew of the gantry was in the stepper positioning of each side. I was able to get the gantry straight without tightening the right belt, though it still needs tightening.
